M-tropic strains of HIV bind to first to a CD4 molecule and then to a chemokine co-receptor called CCR5. This binding to dual receptors is necessary for the virus to enter the host cell. The drug maraviroc (Selzentry) blocks the CCR5 co-receptor on host cells so that HIV cannot adsorb to the cell.
