Learning Objectives for "How Bacteria May Resist Our Control Agents"

After completing this section you should be able to perform the following objectives.

1. Name 2 bacteria that have low-permeability membrane barriers and are thereby intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics.

2.** Describe 3 mechanisms (changes in the bacterium) that may enable a bacterium to resist an antibiotic.

3.* Describe R (Resistance) plasmids and state their significance to medical microbiology.

4. State what the following stand for: MRSA, MDRSA, VRE, and MDRTB.

5. Define conjugative transposons.

6. Define antibiotic tolerance.
