Workshops
Below are the workshops being offered by CCBC faculty. Please indicate 1st and 2ndchoices, so we can place you in the workshop you want to attend. You can send your RSVP by April 17, 2009 to Sue Weglein at: sweglein@ccbcmd.edu or call: 443.840.3375
1. Carr Kizzier: Setting as Character
In fiction, physical environs can be described and used in ways that advance character development and the themes of a work. Presenting the "setting" of a short story requires skillful concision, but done well, it can have the power of poetry in narrative form. This workshop will introduce environment as a vital component to the crafting of short fiction and offer a few strategies for using it to best effect.
2. Annie Nguyen: Creative Non-fiction: Totally Now, Totally Hip, Totally Cool
Everybody’s publishing memoirs these days, and the line between fiction and fact is under cultural scrutiny, thanks in part to James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces. Learn the real craft of creative non-fiction; discover the blending the world you know so well—your own life—with your art. Who could write your life better than you?
3. Evan Balkan: Time to Publish!
You’ve written some great stuff. Now what? This session will guide you through the etiquette of query letters, identifying markets, and learning the “business side” of writing.
4. Stephanie Briggs: Off the Cuff: Responding to Art and Music
Stimulate your eyes and ears—the world is alive with amazing sounds and visions. Use projected images and music to create short stories or poems. This workshop will work your creative muscle, helping you take advantage of your senses and work responses to art and music into your writing. If we have time at the end, we might look at some of your favorite images, so bring one with you if you want to.
