What is amateur Radio?

 

 

Amateur Radio is basically a public service hobby which one can become involved. Just like any other hobby it has many side avenues to follow. Initially, however, one should earn a license in order to be able to operate a "Ham Radio Station". See http://www.arrl.org
Principles of Amateur Radio

Section 97.1 of the FCC Rules gives five principles for the basis of ham radio.

a: Recognition and enhancement of the value of the amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommerical communications service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communciations.

b: Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art.

c: Encouragement and improvement of the amateur service throught rules which provide for advancing skills in both the communications and technical phases of the art.

d: Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians and electronics experts.

e: Continuation and extension of the amateur's unique ability to enhance international goodwill.

Who holds a license?
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission issues the license. A U.S. license allows you to operate wherever the amateur service is regulated by the FCC.
