Creating Our First Webpage

Establishing a Site

Before we begin creating an HTML webpages, we need to plan and organize our websites. Planning a website prior to coding will make the entire website construction go a lot more smoothly. Trust me!

Main folder for homepage and subfolders for each course

Your homepage (that you will be creating in this lesson) will go in your main folder. The course material you create for each of your courses will go in a separate folder. Don't feel like you have to create websites for all of your courses right now. We will be working on only one of your courses throughout the series of workshops.

Step 1: Creating Folders On Your Disk

Step 1: The first step in establishing a local site is to set up your folders. I will assume that you are saving everything to a floppy disk on your A: drive. Modify these instructions if you are using a zip or hard drive.

From your desktop, double click on the My Computer Icon. My Computer Icon

Then double click on the 3 1/2 A: Drive icon. A: Drive Icon

Step 2: From the menu bar, select FILE >> NEW >> FOLDER.

File >> New >> Folder

Step 3: You will have a little file folder with the words New Folder inside. Simply type the name of your new folder, for example Algebra I or Biology I and then hit ENTER. You will have created your first folder.

New Folder becomes Algebra Folder

Repeat the steps above to create as many folders as you need.

Establishing your "Local Site" In Dreamweaver

Once you have set up your folders on your disk, you are ready to establish your "local site".

Before we get started in creating a local site, let's define exactly what a local site is. A local site consist of the all the folders and files (html, images, sound, flash, etc.) that you are creating which will be saved on your machine or disk. This may be on a floppy disk, a zip disk or on your hard drive. The choice is up to you.

From the menu bar, select SITE >> NEW SITE. You will be presented with a box like the one below.

Site Definition Dialog Box

Under Category, make sure Local Info is selected.

Under Site Name, type in the name of your site. For example, Donna's Website. You can call the website anything you want. None of this information will appear on the webpage. It is only used for website management.

Under Local Root Folder: select the A: drive. You can search for this by clicking on the little folder next to the box or just type in A:\.

Under HTTP Address Field, put in the path to your assigned space on the server. For example, my space is located at student.ccbc.cc.md.us/~dtupper. Your path should be similar, except replace the ~dtupper with your own name.

When you are done, click OK.
