COURSE DESCRIPTION

English 052 is a writing-intensive review course that will help prepare students for writing assignments in college as well as in the workplace. This course will help students to create stronger sentences and stronger paragraphs, which are the building blocks of effective writing. Students will practice every aspect of the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, revision and editing, and mechanics. Students will be responsible for completing journal and language practice activities as well as other class activities. Students will complete four

5-paragraph essays in this course.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

*college-level dictionary and thesaurus                 *manila folder              *hilighter pen

*multi-section spiral notebook for journals and notes         *3.5 inch high density diskette

 

 

ABOUT GRADES

English 052 is a Pass/Fail Course. You will be given a grade of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. To receive a Satisfactory grade, you will need to have the following items in your Portfolio:

 

-          4 papers with all drafts, notes, and planning materials attached

(3 out of 4 papers must have a final grade of 70% or better)

-          Journal Entries/Brainstorm Activities

-          Attendance is worth 25 points. Each day of class you will be given a point if you are present and actively participating. You will need to acquire at least 21 points to receive a Satisfactory Grade.

-          You will be given a Rubric/Grading Sheet for each essay assignment so that you will understand the grading requirements before you begin writing.

-          You will complete a Diagnostic Essay during the first week of class, and a final essay at the end of the semester; these may not be included in the 4 papers listed above.
