Organization

  • has a clear aim, an introduction, and a conclusion.
  • develops and supports main ideas with evidence.
  • displays basic competence in logical development and organization, although it may contain some organizational and argumentative weaknesses.

The writer shows basic competence in paragraph development, unity, and coherence, but the paragraph may lack sophistication.



Style/Expression
The extended piece of writing

  • uses stylistic options, though the style may be unsophisticated.
  • uses language appropriate to an academic setting.

The meaning of individual sentences is clear although some sentences may be awkward and lack variety. Sentence structures are generally correct but may show limited mastery of subordination, emphasis, variety, length, modification.

Grammar/ Mechanics
The extended piece of writing is virtually free of all major errors, including run-ons, fragments, subject-verb agreement errors, and verb formation errors. A few minor errors may occur, but they should not offset the merits of the paper.
