PROJECT #5: EDITORIAL
(Susan Gabriel)
Task:
Choose a controversial subject; take one side and argue why your side
is the correct one, OR choose a problem and discuss your suggested
solutions for solving the problem, OR issue a “call for action,” asking
your readers to get involved in a cause. Your goal is to create an
editorial that you could submit to the “Campus Editorials” section of
The Montage.
Two subjects are off limits for this project: abortion and
capital punishment.
Purpose:
Your purpose in writing is to persuade your readers to accept your
position on the controversial subject you have chosen or to agree with
your solutions to the problem discussed or to take action and get
involved in the cause you are supporting. Although you may not be
able to convince all your readers to agree with you, your goal is to
present a clear and well-developed argument that will present sound
reasons for your position on the issue.
Audience:
Your audience for this project will be the readers of The
Montage. Remember that some of your readers will share your
opinions and agree with them; other readers will disagree with your
ideas.
Format:
- Headline and by-line
- 2 sources
- Works Cited page (MLA format)
- 1 direct quotation from each source (no more than 2 direct quotes)
- In-text citation (MLA
format) for each direct quotation
- In-text citation for any
paraphrasing from your sources
- 1 _ to 2 pages in length, typed and double-spaced.
