"Pilot of the Pilot"
May 21, 2007

This "pilot of the pilot" will have three major purposes:
  1. To allow five instructors maximum latitude to attempt to determine what activities are most like to help accelerated learning students succeed in ENG 101.

  2. To determine whether three hours a week in the supporting course is needed or if fewer hours would be sufficient.

  3. To discover and resolve problems that may arise when we conduct the large-scale pilot in fall 2008.

The "pilot of the pilot" would be conducted as follows:
  1. Five sections would be piloted, one at Dundalk and two each at Catonsville and Essex.

  2. Eight students who had been placed in ENG 052 and who volunteered for this "pilot of the pilot" would be placed in each of the designated sections of ENG 101 for a total of just forty students.

  3. The other twelve students in the ENG 101 sections would have placed directly in 101.

  4. The accelerated learning students would also register for a designated section of ENG 052.  This 052 section would have only the eight accelerated learning students and would be taught by the same instructor as the 101 section.

  5. Students would receive three credits for the 101 course and zero credits for the 052.

  6. The five instructors would make a recommendation to the full committee in January 2008 about how the supporting course should be structured for the large scale pilot.

This format, using 052 as the supporting course for the accelerated learning students, is not intended to be the model for the large-scale pilot.  It is being used simply because it is the only vehicle available for this coming fall; it would not be possible to design a completely new course and get it approved for this fall.  Using this format, with three contact hours per week, will give the faculty maximum time to try out various approaches to supporting these accelerated learning students and determine what is most effective.
