Photographic Surveys
I hold the distinction of being the only artist to participate in all three of the major regional photographic surveys: North Avenue Legacy; Photographic Survey of Maryland; and Photo Baltimore '77.
In 1988 I was selected as one of the five photographers for the North Avenue Legacy photography project. A year long documentation effort, the project served to identify and illustrate the social, economic and cultural changes occurring along the entire North Avenue corridor. The project's main objective was to complete a permanent collective portrait to capture the rebirth and spirit of a once decaying neighborhood. The project was administered by the Mayor's Office of Folklife and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
From July 1979 until June 1980, I participated in the Photographic Survey of Maryland as a full-time photographer making images in Maryland that depict and describe the State's diversity. Twenty-one photographers produced over 10,000 negatives with the intention of presenting a contemporary portrait of the state. Funded by Equitable Bank, the project culminated with over 150 prints exhibited at The Maryland Institute, College of Art. Other survey work included the Peale Museum's Photo Baltimore '77. Working as one of six full-time photographers, I documented Baltimore from February 1977 through August 1978. The project produced over 15,000 negatives and 1,000 prints. The main objectives of the project were to enhance the museum's photographic archive of the ciyt and to produce both catalog, Visions of the City: Six Baltimore Photographersand traveling exhibition.
Presented on my web site is a selective sampling from the thousands of images produced for the projects.
