Course Rationale:

 

Computer literacy is important because computers are an essential part of our society today.  Being able to use the computer effectively and efficiently will only make you more valuable in today’s job market. Therefore, it is very important to have a basic understanding of computers, how to use a variety of software applications, and be able to search the Internet. This class will provide practical examples of using a PC that will increase your productivity.

 

Course Description:

 

Discusses introductory computer concepts, data versus information, information retrieval techniques and the impact of computers on business and society; emphasizes application of technology.

 

3 credits: 3 lecture hours (this course is delivered in a combination lecture and hands-on format).

Prerequisite:  (ENGL 051 or LVE 1) and (RDNG 051 or LVR 1)

 

Note:  At least one-hour additional lab time is required; however, this may vary depending on the individual.  The Homework Lab, Essex campus room N315, is available for students needing additional time.  A lab aide is available to answer questions.  Lab aides are also available for help, but you're responsible for completing your assignments.

 

 

 

Course Objectives

 

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

 

1.      define basic computer terminology including Web 2.0 terminology;

2.      identify and describe the components of a computer system;

3.      explain the roles of system and application software;

4.      describe various storage media, including appropriate use and management;

5.      identify the usage of emerging hardware and software technologies and how they are being used to solve problems and create efficiency;

6.      explain the importance of security and privacy, and compare and contrast various methods of implementation;

7.      demonstrate a minimum skill level with major word processing application software;

8.      demonstrate a minimum skill level with major spreadsheet application software;

9.      demonstrate a minimum skill level with other major application software, such as presentation, database, and email software;

10.     apply information literacy skills to prepare course assignments, plan their careers, and manage lifelong learning;

11.     evaluate the importance of computer technology, its historical perspective and its impact on our daily lives; and  

12.     evaluate the impact technology has had on ethics, diversity and emerging issues in our global community, in a collaborative group environment.

Course Requirements

 

1.      Regular punctual attendance is expected of all students. Students are expected to be prepared to stay for the entire class period. Students are responsible for all announcements, material covered, and assignments due when absent from class.

2.      Students are expected to read the chapter assignments before coming to class and be prepared to discuss topics in class. Sleeping in class is unacceptable.

3.      Technology plays a vital role in this course and students are expected to put away all electronic devices. The instructor retains the right to ask a student to place the device in the front of the class. Students who are uncooperative will be asked to leave the classroom.

4.      All Lab Manual and other assigned exercises must be completed as assigned and submitted according to the due date. Full credit will not be received for late submissions unless appropriate documentation is provided.

5.      Exams must be taken as scheduled in class. If you know that you will be unable to take an exam on a given date or an emergency occurs, call the instructor to make arrangements to take the exam. Documentation will be required.

6.      The student will present a three to five minutes presentation or write a two to three page paper on a current application of technology discussed in the class.

7.      Assignments (labs, quizzes, etc.): Assignments will not be available after the due date unless an emergency occurs. Documentation will be required.

 

 

 

Attendance Policy

 

All students are expected to attend class regularly and punctually to derive maximum benefit from instruction and to contribute to the learning process in the classroom. Attendance will be taken for each class. You will find that it is very beneficial to attend class in terms of accumulating points toward the final grade. 

 

Your grade will drop by a letter grade if you miss more than 20% of the attendance days.

 

You must be present in class to take the Exams; no make-up exams, unless appropriate documentation is provided on time.
