The Circle: This
film (banned in Iran, by the way) shows the life of several Iranian women
during a day. One feels the pain and frustration of the female characters
as they go through their life as second-class citizens. The movie
really has no plot; it's strength lies in showing a world I, for one, knew
very little about. Rating 3
out of 4. (6/17/01)

Center of the World: This
film, directed by Wayne Wang, is about the sexual relationship between
a computer tycoon and a stripper. The film touches on some good ideas
but doesn't follow through with them. Basically this movie was like
a late-night Cinemax movie, but a little better. Rating 2
out of 4. (5/13/01)

The Claim: This
film, directed by Micheal Winterbottom, is about life in 1867 California.
The story involves a woman, her daughter, the railroad, and the love and
hate they bring to the little town of Kingdom Come. The cinematography
is beautiful as you feel you really are freezing in the Sierra Nevadas.

The Caveman's Valentine: Samuel
L. Jackson stars as a homeless man who gets caught up in a murder mystery.
The story is average, but Jackson is good as a paranoid psychotic.
The relationship between Jackson and his daughter and the film's method
of showing his mental imagery keep the movie above board. Rating

out of 4. (3/24/01)

Chocolat: The
enjoyment and passion of life is the point fed to you in this film.
A woman and her chocolate shop rock a small French village (kind of like
an European "Harper Valley PTA"). The acting is ok, and the plot,
"sans" one or two surprises, is average. Rating 2.5
out of 4. (1/27/01)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: This
film contains the drama, action, and compelling characters you would find
in any great epic. The martial arts in this film are the most impressive
I have seen. Do not let the subtitles deter you from this perfect
blend of fantasy, love, and good ol'-fashion' fightin'. Rating 4
out of 4. (1/12/01)

Cast Away:
Tom Hanks plays a Federal Express quality controller that gets stranded
on an island. Hanks gives one of his normal super strong performances.
The ending left me unfulfilled after the first three-fourths of the movie.

Charlie's Angels: Drew Barrymore,
Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Bill Murray in this movie from the 1970's TV
show. This movie is so stupid, goofy, impossible, and cheesy that
it is somewhat entertaining. This movie did what it was supposed
to do: titilate and make you forget about your troubles for two hours.
Rating 2.5 out of 4. (11/3/00)
