Death to Smootchy: Edward
Norton, Robin Williams, and Danny Devito star in this very dark comedy
set in the world of children's television. This movie has some funny
scenes, but also has long stretches of dullness. Devito's pace (he
directs) is very uneven as some developments happen very quickly and others
are very drawn out. Rating 2
out of 4. (3/29/02)

The Devil's Backbone: This
Spanish film takes place during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's.
A remote orphanage holds a supernatural secret that brings out the best
and worst in people. The mood and characters of this film rival the
better supernatural Hollywood films like "The Sixth Sense". Rating
3.5
out of 4. (3/03/02)

Diamond Men: This
wonderful film stars Robert Forster and Donnie Wahlberg as traveling diamond
salesmen on opposing sides of music, selling ability, age, and a lot of
other things. Forster's professional, classic, classy widower is
the gem of the good cast of characters. This movie is very simple,
but delivers on entertainment. Rating 3.5
out of 4. (9/22/01)

The Deep End: This
"Hitchcockian" could-have-been stars Tilda Swinton and Goran Visnjic.
The story revolves around a mother trying to protect her son, who may have
been involved in a murder. The performances are good and you feel
for the characters. Rating 3
out of 4. (8/26/01)

Down to Earth: Chris
Rock stars in this comedic remake of Warren Beatty's "Heaven Can Wait".
This film doesn't have the depth of characters of "Heaven", but it does
have some funny lines. The love story in the film is presented great
at times and not-so-great at other times. Rating 2
out of 4. (2/16/01)

Dude, Where's My Car?: One
of those stories were everything comes together to create a total mess
of a film. This movie makes the BAD 1980's teen
flicks look like "Citizen Kane". I'm giving it a 0.5 because I have
a touch of compassion and I did giggle once. Rating 0.5
out of 4. (12/21/00)

Dark Days: A documentary about
the homeless living in the New York City train tunnels. This movie
makes you appreciate what you have. However, these people seem to
have everything except a solid job, running water, and enough rattraps.
