Frailty: This
suspense-drama stars Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey and is directed
by Bill Paxton. Paxton is a father that believes God has commanded
him to kill demons in human form; McConaughey plays one of his sons grown
up. This film is superb and has the feel of "The Sixth Sense" or
"Unbreakable" with the dark touch of "Se7en". Rating 3.5
out of 4. (4/28/02)
-
Fat Girl: This
average French film is about two teenage sisters and their relationship.
The 14-year-old younger sister has a weight problem and a hot-cold relationship
with her 16-year-old sexually active sibling. The film has some realistic
scenes and the ending is strange. Rating 2.5
out of 4. (1/12/02)
-
Focus: William
H. Macy, Laura Dern, and Meat Loaf Aday star in this powerful film set
in WWII Brooklyn. The film effectively shows the institutionalistic
and paranoid nature of prejudice as Macy's character is believed to be
jewish simply because of the kind of glasses he wears. I had no idea
how ridiculously anti-semitic some parts of our country was during the
1940's. Rating 3.5
out of 4. (1/06/02)

The Fellowship of the Ring: The
first film of the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R Tolkien's Lord
of the Rings has an epic feel. The film is good, but not being
a "hobbithead", it wasn't great. The special effects and the cinematography
are the highlights of the film. Rating 3
out of 4. (12/22/01)
-
From Hell: Johnny
Depp and Heather Graham star in this "Jack the Ripper" flick directed by
the Hughes Brothers. The Hughes' imagery in this film are very good,
and one does feel the anxiety of the townspeople having a madman walking
the street. The film ran a little too long and at times you wish
the end of the film would just come. Rating 3
out of 4. (10/27/01)
-
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within:
This
futuristic-sci-fi-animated film has the best animation I have seen.
The story is average and the ending is pretty weak. The creators
of this movie are the creators of the video games, so don't expect anything
too different. Rating 2
out of 4. (7/13/01)
-
Fifteen Minutes: I
was throughly entertained by this Robert DeNiro-Edward Burns serial killer
film. The movie reminds me of "Natural Born Killers" with the plot
about the media's fascination with crime, but "15 Minutes" is not quite
as graphic (it does have a few disturbing deaths however). There
are a few Cameos and the ending is so cliche', it actually works.
Rating 3.5 out
of 4. (3/11/01)
-
The Family Man: Nicholas
Cage and Tea Leoni star in this "what-would-have-happened-if-you-had-done-this"
movie. The "what-would-have-happened" part is so touching that you
don't care about the "what-actually-happened" part. The second bookend
of the movie is somewhat unfulfilling. Rating 2
out of 4. (1/2/01)

Finding Forrester:
Sean Connery and newcomer Rob Brown excel in this film about fear, friendship,
overcoming obstacles, and writing. This movie combines of the plot
outline of "Scent of a Woman" and the realism of "Good Will Hunting".
This movie is on par with both of those films. Rating 3.5
out of 4. (12/29/00)
