The Royal Tenenbaums: Wes
Anderson, director of "Bottle Rocket" and "Rushmore", crafts a superior
comedy-drama powered by Anderson's and Owen Wilson great screenplay.
The cast is superb, highlighted by Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Gwyneth
Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke and Owen Wilson. This is not your typical
stupid comedy; the plot and flow of the film are very intelligent.

Riding in Cars With Boys: This
film, based on a true story, shows the ups and mostly downs of the life
of teen-mother Bev D'onofrio. Drew Barrymore and the rest of the
cast do a respectable job, but my problem with the film is Penny Marshall's
direction. Like some of Marshall's other films, this film is a little
too long for the story being told and a little too light for the serious
issues being raised. Rating 2.5

Rush Hour 2: Chris
Tucker and Jackie Chan star in this sequel to the 1998 surprise hit.
Notice that Chris Tucker is billed first as this is just a Chris Tucker
jokefest with a little action sprinkled in. Tucker is funny sometimes
(check out the bloopers at the end), but too much of him and not enough
action makes an average movie. Rating 2.5

The Road Home: When
his father dies, a man comes back to his village and tells the story of
how his mother and father fell in love. This Chinese film has two
average bookends and a GREAT love story in the middle. All of you
romantics out there will love this film. Rating 3.5
out of 4. (6/30/01)

Requiem for a Dream: Artistic
film documenting 4 people falling into drug abuse, drug dealing, and drug
addiction. Movie "students" should appreciate the imaginative, quick-editing,
slow-motion, and fast-motion look by Darren Aronofsky (director of "Pi").
If you are a drug abuser or know someone that needs to "kick the habit",
this film is the cure for all that ails you. Rating
3.5
