About SMIL
What is SMIL?
SMIL stands for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language. It is an XML based language that allows people to write interactive multimedia presentations. The latest version is SMIL 2.1. The file extention is usually .smil, but occasionally is .smi.
What is SMIL Used For?
SMIL is used to integrate the following into multimedia presentations:
- Timing
- Layouts
- Animations
- Visual transitions
- Media embedding
Some things that SMIL can do are:
- Contain links to other SMIL presentations
- Create internet presentations
- Create slideshows
- Display files from multiple Web servers
- Display multiple file types
- Display multiple files at the same time
- Include control buttons
- Stop
- Start
- Next
- Previous
How is SMIL Written?
SMIL has a similar structure to HTML. It had two main sections: "head" and "body". SMIL is written in XML and can be written using a regular text editor. The two main tags used in SMIL are "parallel" and "sequential".
